The Open is the undisputed holy grail of polo anywhere in the world. The ultimate goal for the world's best polo players and a true test of skill and horsepower.
Preparation for it is a year round process; for which the huge young horse programmes all around the country are testament - because being superbly mounted is the most key ingredient of all. To see the best players in the world on the best horses in the world - come to Palermo.
Only eight teams were allowed to enter; two of which had to qualify back in September - Sao Jose and, much to Mariano Aguerre's chagrin, Alegria. Of the six who did not have to qualify, really the only two contenders for the title were defending champions La Dolfina, and of course the only 40 goal team, Ellerstina.
La Aguada and Pilara were certainly not going to go down without a fight however, and Chapa 2, having made two finals this season, looked strong.
The final between Ellerstina and La Dolfina was postponed by 24 hours due to heavy rain. They played for just two minutes on the Saturday and continued from where the clock had stopped on the Sunday.
